Poland is set to deploy an additional 2,000 soldiers to support the Border Guard along its border with Belarus, according to Deputy Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration, Maciej Wąsik. These reinforcements, discussed within the Committee of the Council of Ministers for National Security and Defense, will strengthen operations in the Podlaskie and Lubelskie voivodeships. The move comes as Border Guard forces are already backed by around 2,000 soldiers.
The initiative, proposed by the Chief Commander of the Border Guard and endorsed by Defense Minister Mariusz Błaszczak, marks a doubling of troops from the initial proposal of 1,000. The decision highlights the rising pressure on the Polish-Belarusian border, largely orchestrated by Belarusian authorities. Wąsik emphasized that the influx of attempts at illegal crossings is notably higher today compared to two years ago.
While acknowledging the possibility of seeking assistance from allies, Wąsik assured that Poland’s border protection remains within its own capabilities. The reinforcements are expected to arrive within the next two weeks, bolstering security efforts and underscoring Poland’s commitment to safeguarding its borders.
