In December 2025, a decision will be made by the Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage on the joint proposal by Poland, Austria, and Luxembourg to inscribe “Barbórka and Mining Traditions” on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Mining communities across Poland, Austria, and Luxembourg have long celebrated Barbórka, honoring Saint Barbara, the patron saint of miners, on December 4th each year. This tradition not only pays homage to the saint but also serves as a vibrant expression of mining culture.

The celebrations are marked by lively festivities, including traditional music performances by mining brass bands that accompany the day from dawn till dusk. From the early morning “miners’ reveille” to the evening revelries, the atmosphere is filled with the spirit of camaraderie and heritage.
Preserving Cultural Identity
The proposal aims not only to recognize Barbórka but also to safeguard the broader spectrum of mining traditions, encompassing folklore and language unique to the mining profession. Through this inscription, these countries seek to ensure the continued preservation and promotion of their rich mining heritage.
