Poland’s women’s chess team secured a crucial victory against China, winning 2.5:1.5 in the sixth round of the 45th Chess Olympiad in Budapest. This victory moved the Polish team into third place, keeping them undefeated in the tournament.
Key Victory Over China
The Polish team, seeded third, had already defeated Panama, Brazil, Romania, and Turkey before facing China, which holds the fourth-highest average rating in the tournament. Despite China missing some top players, including reigning world champion Ju Wenjun, Poland’s performance remained exceptional.
Oliwia Kiołbasa was the standout player for Poland, securing a win against Qi Guo on the third board. Kiołbasa, undefeated in Budapest, is on track to repeat her remarkable performance from the previous Olympiad, where she won gold on her board.
Polish Men’s Team Draws with Austria
Meanwhile, the Polish men’s team, ranked 11th, drew 2:2 with Austria, dropping to 16th place. Despite a solid tournament start, the men’s team failed to secure a win in this round. Jan-Krzysztof Duda came closest to victory but ultimately settled for a draw.
