The Quest for Beauty
The first part of the exhibit revolves around the theme of the ideal of beauty. Picasso sought inspiration in the world of antiquity, incorporating classical harmony into his early works. This aesthetic persisted even through the Spanish Civil War and World War II. The influence of ancient and Renaissance art is evident in intimate scenes and portraits of Picasso’s partner, Françoise Gilot.
Heritage of Myths
Picasso’s birthplace, Malaga, steeped in a history of nearly 3000 years, played a crucial role in shaping his artistic identity. Mythological figures like the Minotaur, centaur, and faun captured his imagination, with numerous representations showcased in the exhibition.
Ceramic Faces
Post-World War II, Picasso passionately embraced ceramics during his time on the French Riviera. The exhibition features over 3500 clay objects adorned with depictions of mythological figures, animals, plants, and food, showcasing Picasso’s artistic craftsmanship.
Polish Touch
Picasso’s visit to Poland in 1948 left a lasting impact, influencing some of his later works. His time in Warsaw and Krakow, including a visit to the National Museum, is commemorated in the exhibit.
This exhibition, marking the 50th anniversary of Picasso’s death and Spain’s Presidency of the EU Council, primarily features works from the Museo Casa Natal Picasso in Malaga.
