A Symbolic Place, A Solemn Day – Tribute Paid to the Cursed Soldiers at “Łączka” [PHOTOS]

On March 1, ceremonies marking the National Day of Remembrance of the Cursed Soldiers were held at the “Łączka” section of the Powązki Military Cemetery in Warsaw. In this special place, where the communist security apparatus secretly buried the victims of post-war repression, tribute was paid to the Unbroken Soldiers.

The ceremonies on March 1, 2026, were traditionally held at the Powązki Military Cemetery, in Section “Ł”, known as “Łączka”. The President of the Republic of Poland addressed participants with a special letter, emphasizing the unique character of this site and its significance for preserving the memory of the Cursed Soldiers. The letter noted that every year on March 1, veterans, victims’ families, clergy, and representatives of the state authorities gather there to honor the heroes of the anti-communist underground.

Tribute at “Łączka”

“I join you in prayer and in paying tribute to all the remarkable patriots who opposed the Soviet occupation and the communist enslavement of our Homeland. We honor their heroism and sacrifice in unequal struggles, undertaken with immense determination, in the conviction that ‘it had to be done.’ The Unbroken Soldiers found within themselves the spiritual strength to become the conscience of an entire nation longing for freedom. They fought to the very end, to their last breath, bearing witness that ‘Poland has not yet perished,'” wrote President Karol Nawrocki.

The National Day of Remembrance of the Cursed Soldiers is observed on March 1 – the anniversary of the 1951 execution of the leaders of the 4th Main Board of the Freedom and Independence Association, including Lt. Col. Łukasz Ciepliński and his associates. The communists secretly buried their bodies in unknown locations, and many of them were laid to rest precisely at “Łączka”.
