Across Poland, outrage is growing over the railway sabotage, while the head of Polish State Railways (PKP) insists these were only “a few incidents”

The president of Polish State Railways Railway Lines (PKP PLK), Piotr Wyborski, said that on the Warsaw-Lublin railway line on Sunday “a few incidents were recorded”. He stressed that the railway company’s procedures had worked. “Communication between the dispatcher and the train driver was maintained, and no one was injured,” he said.

On Sunday morning, the train driver reported irregularities in the railway infrastructure near Życzyn in the Garwolin district, close to the PKP Mika station. The Mazovian police stated that initial inspection of the tracks showed damage to a section, which caused the train to stop. On Sunday, pro-government media did not report on the event at all, and the spokesperson for the Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) claimed that “there is no basis” to assume third-party involvement. Today, it has already been officially confirmed that acts of sabotage took place.

The shift in narrative apparently has not reached PKP PLK president Piotr Wyborski. Around noon today, he stated that “a few incidents” had been recorded on Sunday on the railway line between Warsaw and Lublin. “We are cooperating with the services to identify the individuals who caused this damage” he said.

He assured that PLK continuously monitors all railway infrastructure under the company’s management.

“We remain in constant contact with carriers and other personnel present in railway areas. Yesterday evening, we prepared an additional message to increase alertness and communication with railway workers who may detect irregularities more quickly,” he said.

He emphasized that “in response to the incidents” on the Warsaw-Lublin line, the railway company’s procedures had worked. “Communication between the dispatcher and the train driver was maintained, and no one was injured” Wyborski stated.

And credit is indeed due to the railway workers, but calling such events “incidents” by their chief is highly misplaced today. “We are at the site of the explosion near Garwolin, near the Mika station, an explosion that most likely aimed to blow up a train on the Warsaw-Dęblin route” said Prime Minister Donald Tusk, adding that we are dealing with an act of sabotage.
