A 26-year-old man from Gliwice has been fined after attempting to drive his car onto a flood barrier to go fishing. The incident occurred in Przyszowice, Silesia, where just days earlier, local authorities had reinforced the flood defenses with sandbags due to recent flooding and high water levels.
The man, determined to access his preferred fishing spot, decided to move the sandbags that were strengthening the barrier. However, his actions were quickly reported to the police by a bystander, and officers arrived on the scene as he was rearranging the defenses.
The angler explained to the police that he was simply looking for a place to fish, unaware of the significance of the recently reinforced flood barriers. While he was forced to repair the damage he caused, he also received a 500 złoty fine for violating local water regulations.
According to the police, Polish water law prohibits driving or riding along flood barriers to maintain their integrity and prevent flooding. They emphasized that even small actions, such as tampering with flood defenses, can jeopardize the safety of local communities.
The Gliwice police issued a reminder that respecting these laws is essential to prevent future disasters.
