Assault on TV Republika Journalist at Trzaskowski Rally. Prosecutor Drops the Case

The prosecutor’s office has decided to discontinue the investigation into the assault on TV Republika journalist Janusz Życzkowski, which took place on April 10, 2025, in Wieluń during a rally held by Rafał Trzaskowski. “The prosecutor, in discontinuing the case, justified the decision by stating that there is no public interest in pursuing the matter, which is an absurd explanation,” Życzkowski said.

In early April 2025, during the election campaign, Rafał Trzaskowski visited Wieluń. After a meeting with supporters, he was asked a tough question by Janusz Życzkowski of TV Republika. The journalist received no answer. Instead, the politician’s security personnel attacked him.

“I was hit in the torso and pushed. My equipment was knocked to the ground and destroyed. I also lost my glasses,” Życzkowski reported. The next day, feeling worse, he was admitted to the hospital.

The journalist reported the incident to the police, and the Press Freedom Monitoring Center of the Polish Journalists Association also intervened.

Now, Życzkowski has announced that the prosecutor has decided to drop the case regarding the assault in Wieluń.

“In dropping the case, the prosecutor justified it by saying there was no public interest in pursuing the matter, which is a bizarre explanation. The media have the right to ask politicians questions, and their security personnel have no right to react in such a way. We have yet to receive any apology,” – Janusz Życzkowski said today on TV Republika.

He added that the prosecutor’s decision will be appealed.
