Today, on April 23rd, 2023, we commemorate the anniversary of the death of St. Adalbert, one of the most important saints of Poland and Europe. In Poland, St. Adalbert is especially venerated as the patron saint of the country and the Archdiocese of Gniezno.
Born in 956 in Poland, Adalbert was a bishop and missionary who devoted his life to preaching the Gospel among pagan peoples. He was also one of the first bishops of Prague, where he was known as Vojtěch. He died in 997 during a mission among the Prussians who inhabited the territories of present-day Poland and Germany.
Today, on the anniversary of his death, the faithful pray for his intercession to protect the country from hostile influences and to bring unity and peace to the nation. Many Poles believe that his sacrificial work and dedication to the good of others serve as an inspiration for them to follow.
