“Continued Partnership,” “Support from Trump,” “A Referendum on Tusk’s Government”: U.S. Media React to Nawrocki’s Victory

“In their coverage of the Polish presidential election and the victory of Karol Nawrocki, American media have once again revealed stark differences in their approach to international politics—differences largely shaped by their ideological leanings,” observes Tomasz Winiarski, an expert on American affairs, in an interview with Niezalezna.pl.

Congratulations to Karol Nawrocki, the President-elect of the Republic of Poland, have been pouring in from around the world. Among those who offered their commendations was Matt Schlapp, chairman of the American Conservative Union and organizer of CPAC.

“Victory in Poland. Congratulations to President-elect Karol Nawrocki. CPAC was honored to be in the battle,” Schlapp wrote on social media platform X.

It is worth noting that Karol Nawrocki was one of the keynote speakers at CPAC Poland, which took place on May 27 this year. During his speech, he emphasized his commitment to ensuring that Poland becomes a leading voice within the European Union in transatlantic relations.

The Polish presidential election has also received significant attention in the American press. Tomasz Winiarski, commenting for Niezalezna.pl, highlights how various media outlets interpreted the event differently depending on their political orientation.

“In their reporting on the Polish presidential election and Karol Nawrocki’s victory, American media once again exposed clear divergences in their approach to international affairs, shaped by their ideological preferences,” Winiarski notes.

“Conservative-leaning outlets, such as the Washington Examiner and the New York Post, approached the topic with restraint and composure,” he adds.

“They limited themselves to factual summaries of the events, focusing on key points: Donald Trump’s endorsement of Karol Nawrocki and the anticipated continuation of the political direction set by President Andrzej Duda—particularly regarding the close ties between Poland and the United States.”

“Unlike liberal media, they did not seek out ideological controversies but instead portrayed the election as a natural step in political evolution, potentially strengthening Poland’s strategic partnership with the U.S.,” he continues.

In contrast, liberal and left-leaning outlets, such as The Washington Post and CNN, placed strong emphasis on Nawrocki’s association with Donald Trump, Winiarski explains.

“They framed the Polish election as a kind of referendum on the administration of Donald Tusk. CNN also highlighted Nawrocki’s past and suggested that as president, he is likely to use his powers—including the veto—to block the current government’s initiatives,” Winiarski concludes.
