“You don’t handle matters like this by trying to prove who is more important or smarter through setups in the woods. You simply need to understand your place in history. The president of our country, Mr. Nawrocki, should above all act with reason in such situations, because the most important thing is Poland’s security, not quarrels,” said Włodzimierz Czarzasty, Speaker of the Sejm, commenting on the decision of President Karol Nawrocki. The backdrop to the dispute is the possible revocation of the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
President Karol Nawrocki expressed outrage on Friday at Zelenskyy’s decision to name one of Ukraine’s special units after the “Heroes of the UPA.” During a briefing, the Polish president informed journalists that he had requested the Chapter of the Order of the White Eagle, which will convene on June 8, to strip the Ukrainian president of the distinction. At the same time, he emphasized that the final decision rests with him.
The decision by the Ukrainian president has been condemned by the entire Polish right wing, while the ruling camp has called for “restraint” from the Polish head of state.
Czarzasty once again criticized the president, speaking of “setups in the woods”
Appearing on TOK FM, Włodzimierz Czarzasty stated that “what the Ukrainians did is wrong. I condemn this decision. I am dissatisfied with it. I believe it is unreasonable and should not have happened,” he said.
“As for the Order of the White Eagle, the key is distance – above all, distance. Let me remind you, these are not comparable cases, but still: Schröder has the Order of the White Eagle. Schröder is an orthodox supporter of Putin, and I don’t know Mr. Nawrocki’s position on this. Mussolini had the Order of the White Eagle. It was never taken away. […] Cardinal Stanisław Dziwisz is also a recipient of the Order. Ladies and gentlemen, I don’t want to be malicious, but I think the only ‘knightly’ element in his case is the title itself,” he added.
A moment later, he sharply criticized President Nawrocki, referring again to “setups in the woods.”
“You don’t handle matters like this by escalating further, refusing to meet in two weeks, and then breaking off contacts – where does that lead? If we leave the European Union, there is only one direction – the East. If we abandon the fight for Ukraine, where people are dying, we only provide money and weapons […] while they are giving their lives,” said the politician of the New Left.
He continued: “If someone does not understand this and tries to gain 5 percentage points, a nice wave on social media, praise online – if someone wants to do that, then it is not serious, responsible politics.
