Czarzasty Promises Ukraine EU Membership. “Perhaps He Made It Up and Is Telling Fantastical Stories”

“Statements of this kind expose the reputation of the Polish state to ridicule, because Marshal Czarzasty is not appearing there as a representative of his political party, but as the highest representative of the legislative authority – that is, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland,” assessed Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Chancellery of President Karol Nawrocki, referring to Włodzimierz Czarzasty’s declaration that Ukraine will join the European Union.

On Tuesday, delegations from many countries arrived in Ukraine. The meeting was organized on the fourth anniversary of Russia’s invasion. In Kyiv, six prime ministers, the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, the President of Finland, as well as numerous parliamentary delegations and ministers were present.

Representing Poland were Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski and the Speaker of the Sejm, Włodzimierz Czarzasty. The latter caused considerable controversy. The second-highest official in the Polish state declared before an international audience that Ukraine will join the European Union.

“One of the most important guarantees of security for Ukraine and its development will be its accession to the European Union. Poland fully supports these aspirations. You will be in the European Union!” he stated during his speech in the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.

“He Seems to Have Confused His Roles”

The speech by the New Left (Lewica) politician was commented on Tuesday by Zbigniew Bogucki, Head of the Chancellery of President Karol Nawrocki.

“Marshal Czarzasty seems to have confused his roles, because not only did he speak on behalf of Poland – which he is not authorized to do – about Ukraine’s accession to the European Union, but, as I understand it, he also spoke on behalf of the entire European community, didn’t he?” he said.

“I would like to know from the Marshal where he derives the competence and the legal, or at least political, basis for this. Because it seems that he has neither legal, nor formal, nor political grounds. Perhaps it is like with the so-called marshal’s veto – perhaps the Marshal made something up, went to Ukraine and told these fantastical stories about how he would bring Ukraine in, how he assured it of what would happen both in Poland and in the European Union.”

According to Bogucki, “if he were not the Speaker of the Sejm, it might be amusing.”

“However, we are dealing with the second-highest official in the state, and statements of this kind expose the reputation of the Polish state to ridicule, because Marshal Czarzasty is not appearing there as a representative of his political party, but as the highest representative of the legislative authority – that is, the Sejm of the Republic of Poland,” he emphasized. He added that “we are dealing with a very disturbing situation.”
