“The government has a knife at its throat and will lie about various matters, we will witness disinformation, and in fact we have been witnessing it for a long time,” this is how Krzysztof Bosak, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm of the Republic of Poland, commented on the planned cuts in the National Health Fund (NFZ) in RMF FM.
At noon today, a medical summit organized by Donald Tusk will take place. The prime minister’s medical summit was announced immediately after the public learned about the savings plan in the National Health Fund (NFZ) prepared by the minister of health and submitted to the ministry of finance. It will take place one day before the medical summit at the president’s office announced many days ago and at the same time when directors of county hospitals and representatives of local governments – the bodies running those hospitals – are meeting in Warsaw.
Healthcare in Poland is in a dire state. According to data from the Association of Polish Counties (ZPP), at the end of November 2025 county hospitals nationwide had over PLN 22 billion in unpaid service overruns for 2023-2025. This year alone, the National Health Fund (NFZ) has a “hole” of several billion zlotys. Across Poland, due to the poor financial situation, several dozen hospital wards may be closed, particularly maternity units.
“We will witness disinformation,”
A shocking plan for cuts in the National Health Fund (NFZ) amounting to over PLN 10 billion recently leaked to the media. It indicates that in 2026 access to specialists will be reduced, the number of financed surgeries will drop, medication reimbursement for seniors will be limited, and county hospitals will receive less funding. The cuts are also expected to affect the “Good Meal” program.
The government insists that the quality of meals in hospitals will not decline.
“We are not taking meals away, it was a pilot program. A pilot that worked well in hospitals, but we probably do not want hospitals that are only in the pilot and have the “Good Meal” while others do not have this good meal. (…) I believe it has already been made clear in our communications that we are introducing it as a standard in hospitals, also increasing funding for this service within the National Health Fund, so there is certainly no situation in which we are reducing funds for hospital meals,” said Jolanta Sobierańska-Grenda, minister of health, today on Polsat News.
Krzysztof Bosak, Deputy Speaker of the Sejm, was also asked about this matter today on RMF FM.
“It is obvious that quality is correlated with the funds allocated for this purpose. I do not believe that the quality will be maintained. The government has a knife at its throat and will lie about various matters. We will witness disinformation, and in fact we have been witnessing it for a long time,” Bosak assessed.
In the deputy speaker’s view, this is an attempt by the government to shift responsibility onto hospitals.
