Dramatic Scenes at the Polish-German Border: PiS Councilors from Lubusz React

Lubusz councilors from Law and Justice (PiS) are responding to the dramatic situation unfolding at the Polish-German border. “The introduction of permanent border controls and the return of illegal migrants to Poland is of the utmost concern.”

Collapse Under the PO-PSL Coalition

During today’s session, councilors intend to discuss the border situation. Over the weekend, a protest took place near the border bridge in Słubice, opposing the transfer of illegal migrants from Germany to Poland and the implementation of the EU migration pact. The demonstration gathered several hundred participants, including many Słubice residents.

The protest had initially been blocked by what critics call the anti-democratic mayor of Słubice, Marzena Słodownik, but a spontaneous gathering took place regardless.

At today’s session of the Lubusz Regional Assembly, PiS councilors will propose an official appeal to the Polish government, urging immediate intervention in a crisis affecting a large portion of the region. However, it remains unclear whether the ruling coalition of the Civic Platform (PO) and the Polish People’s Party (PSL) will take the issue seriously. These parties have governed Lubusz for over 15 years, and alongside Germany, they bear significant responsibility for the current situation at the border.

Ineffective Actions by the Marshal

In their official position, PiS councilors argue that the actions taken by Lubusz Marshal Marcin Jabłoński have been entirely ineffective, negatively impacting daily life in the Polish-German border region.

“As PiS councilors, we have long pointed out the inaction of the regional government regarding illegal immigration and the transfer of individuals of unknown origin from Germany into Poland. Beyond empty statements, the administration has done nothing,” said Małgorzata Gośniowska-Kola, chairwoman of the PiS club in the Lubusz assembly.

For several months now, Germany has been sending illegal migrants across the border into Poland. Seeking to curb migration, the German authorities have tightened their border controls, leading to massive delays for those crossing. Currently, vehicles leaving Poland for Germany face waiting times of several hours—a serious issue for residents of Słubice and surrounding areas.
