The European Union (EU) has voted on a new climate target that foresees a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the bloc compared to 1990 levels. “What happened in Brussels today is unbelievable. Europe is heading toward self-destruction,” commented Law and Justice (PiS) MEP Daniel Obajtek.
The EU’s new climate target
On Wednesday, the environment ministers of EU member states agreed on a new climate goal for 2040. It calls for a 90 percent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions across the Union compared to 1990 levels. Twenty-one EU countries supported the new target, while Poland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Hungary voted against it, and Belgium and Bulgaria abstained. As part of the 90 percent reduction goal, 5 percent may consist of so-called international carbon credits, with the possibility of increasing this share by another 5 percent.
The European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) also voted on the issue today.
“Europe is heading toward self-destruction,” wrote Daniel Obajtek, Law and Justice (PiS) MEP, in a post published on platform X.
“What happened in Brussels today in the ITRE committee is unbelievable. Europe is heading toward self-destruction,” he wrote. In the video attached to the post, he emphasized that “they have abandoned proper research and analysis of how the situation looks in individual countries.”
“Quite simply, despite the fact that the European economy is shrinking, yet another act of green fanaticism has been voted through – one that completely destroys us and causes the destruction of the European economy,” he concluded.
