EU Launches Proceedings Against Slovakia Over Constitutional Amendments, Sparking Claims of “End of Democracy” from Polish MP

The European Commission on Friday launched proceedings against Slovakia over what it described as a violation of EU law. “Leftist psychos in Brussels no longer allow constitutional changes, even when a sovereign nation elects such a constitutional majority. Which means that there is no democracy left at all,” wrote the Law and Justice MP on X.

The European Union threatens democracy

In September, Slovak lawmakers adopted constitutional amendments that strengthen conservative values. A provision was introduced into the basic law asserting the primacy of national law over EU legislation in matters of “national identity.” The constitution also now includes a clause stating that “Slovakia recognizes only two sexes, biologically determined: male and female.”

On Friday, the European Commission announced that it had sent a formal notice regarding a possible breach of EU law. Bratislava has two months to respond and provide clarification.

“This (amendment) violates the principle of the primacy of EU law, which is a fundamental element of the EU legal order, as well as the principles of autonomy, effectiveness, and uniform application of Union law,”

the Commission stated in its communiqué.

During a televised briefing, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico said that the amendment concerns only issues of national identity, and not other areas in which the EU holds legislative powers, adding that he considers this article of the constitution to be compliant with EU law.

Law and Justice MP Przemysław Czarne also commented on the matter.

“Leftist psychos in Brussels no longer allow constitutional changes, even when a sovereign nation elects such a constitutional majority. Which means that there is no democracy left at all,”

the PiS MP noted.
