Europe and Ukraine’s Reliance on US Arms

According to a report published on Monday, since 2020, Ukraine’s imports of major weaponry have increased nearly a hundredfold compared to 2015-2019. Most of the weapons acquired by Kyiv came from military aid following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. Since then, 35 countries have provided various types of weaponry, including all types of combat vehicles and artillery with a caliber greater than 100 mm.

The report highlights that the U.S. accounts for 45% of arms deliveries to Ukraine, making it the largest supplier. Germany ranks second (12%), followed by Poland (11%). The United States has provided Ukraine with systems such as the Patriot air defense system.

Increased European Arms Imports

Following the announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump to halt military aid, Ukraine now faces a challenging situation. The level of support Europe can provide to the Ukrainian military will be crucial, according to SIPRI expert Dr. Mathew George.

Data collected by SIPRI indicates that since 2020, European NATO countries have doubled their arms imports, with the U.S. being their primary supplier. The U.S. accounts for 64% of weapons deliveries to European allies. This trend is expected to continue, as European NATO members have ordered nearly 500 fighter jets from the U.S.

Deep U.S.-Europe Cooperation

According to George, “breaking the deeply rooted cooperation between Europe and the U.S. would be too costly, even if there is currently a European will for independence.”
