Exposed: Polish Government Lacks Data on Migrants Turned Back from Germany

The Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) and the Border Guard have so far not collected or maintained statistics on the number of migrants turned back from Germany, except for those returned under the Dublin procedure and readmission agreements. “We are coordinating these figures with the German side,” admitted Deputy Interior Minister Czesław Mroczek. Official information obtained from one of the Border Guard units confirms: the number of migrants is significantly higher than what the government and security services have claimed to the public.

Since the beginning of the current coalition’s term, the MSWiA has only published data related to readmissions and the application of the Dublin procedure. The figures released a few days ago are as follows:

Readmissions from Germany to Poland
(Returning a migrant who is illegally present in a country back to the country from which they arrived):

  • 2023: 564 people
  • 2024: 357 people
  • Through June 22, 2025: 89 people

Returns under the Dublin Procedure
(A specific form of readmission: if an asylum seeker applies in one EU country—e.g., Poland—but leaves for another country—e.g., Germany—before receiving a decision, Germany can return that person to Poland):

  • 2023: 404 people
  • 2024: 331 people
  • Through June 22, 2025: 225 people

Hidden Data? It Doesn’t Exist!
These statistics grossly distort the actual situation. They do not include individuals who were turned back at the border due to being denied entry. This large-scale practice was launched by Germany after it introduced border checks with Poland in October 2023.

For many months, Niezalezna.pl has been requesting numerical data from the Border Guard regarding migrants handed over to Poland outside of readmission procedures and the Dublin agreement. Now, the reason for the silence has become clear: the Polish side simply does not possess such statistics. Deputy Interior Minister Czesław Mroczek admitted this in an interview with Radio Zet on Friday. The data is still “being agreed upon with the German side.”

“In 2024 — we’ve checked this, and we’re coordinating the data with the Germans — around 10,000 people were denied entry into Germany; this year, it’s about 4,500. Half of them are Ukrainian citizens,” Mroczek said.

Wioleta Piotrowska, Deputy Minister for Civil Society, also “let it slip.” She gave figures on turnbacks at the German border — 9,000 in 2024. Only when pressed did she admit that these were… German data. When asked about the Polish figures, she claimed they would be available “starting Monday.”

Regular and Detailed Figures from the German Side:
The number of illegal migrants turned back from Germany to Poland, regularly reported by the Bundespolizei:

  • 2023: 1,705
  • 2024: 9,369

Social activism and pressure from the Border Defense Movement have prompted Polish authorities to at least attempt to track these cases. Yesterday, we received a response from only one Border Guard unit — the Nadodrzański Border Division — which oversees only a portion of the Polish-German border.

We asked how many illegal migrants had been accepted into Polish territory by this unit over the last 12 months, outside formal readmission procedures.

It turns out that from the beginning of the year through the end of June, 238 people were admitted — and that’s just in one border section. Contrary to Mroczek’s statements, most were nationals of Syria, Afghanistan, Russia, and Tajikistan.

Niezalezna.pl reported on the troubling lack of statistics back in April. The Border Guard acknowledged that it does receive migrants from German territory and transports them to Poland. However, it does not monitor this practice or collect numerical data.

We asked how many migrants were picked up by Border Guard officers from German territory (including joint posts with German services) in 2025 and 2024. We also asked for figures from previous years. The response was staggering:

“Such data is not collected,” the Border Guard replied in April.
