Krakow lifts flood alert as Vistula River recedes; recent heavy rain caused local flooding but no major disruptions.
The Mayor of Krakow, Aleksander Miszalski, lifted the city’s flood alert on Tuesday. The Vistula River’s water level at the Bielany measurement point has fallen below the warning threshold.
Water Levels Return to Normal
On Tuesday morning, the Vistula River at Bielany measured 333 cm, below the warning level of 370 cm and far from the alarm level of 520 cm. The river’s peak flow occurred on Sunday and Monday, surpassing the warning level but not reaching the critical alarm level. While the river overflowed, flooding the river boulevards and a riverside bike path, it remained within the flood barriers.
Recent Heavy Rainfall
Over the weekend, heavy rain caused significant water accumulation in Krakow. Flooding affected the tunnel near the Łobzów SKA station, the underpass on Prądnicka Street, and parts of Mogilskie Roundabout. Public transport had to be rerouted, and water from blocked drainage systems entered the power distribution room at Żeromski Hospital. Despite these challenges, there was no need for evacuation, and the hospital continued to function normally.
