The Civic Coalition’s flirtation with Confederation politicians during the recent election campaign wasn’t particularly genuine. This is confirmed by Tusk’s tapes, revealed today by Telewizja Republika.
The tapes have shed new light on the internal factional struggles within Civic Platform and Donald Tusk’s journey since regaining the party’s leadership. In the recorded conversation with lawyer Roman Giertych, politicians discussed visions of a potential future government after the 2019 elections. Giertych didn’t mince words when speaking about Confederation politicians.
“Confederation is growing, and I don’t know if you’ve noticed. Probably not, since you’re not interested in this area. There was a significant event today—huge promotion of Confederation on Radio Maryja. This means Rydzyk got scared of Jarek’s (Jarosław Kaczyński’s – ed.) strength and decided to chip away at him. If he seriously pursues this, it could mean 10 points for Confederation at PiS’s expense. With the D’Hondt system, that is hugely significant,” Giertych explained to Tusk.
Tusk agreed, stating, “Absolutely key, still the 40-point threshold. If they clearly get 40+ points – we’re screwed. If they have 40 or less – everything becomes possible.”
“If they (PiS) don’t get a majority alone, only with Confederation, and they have Korwin-Mikke as Deputy Prime Minister and Bosak or Winnicki as Minister of Education,” Giertych speculated, adding at the end:
“But they’re idiots. That government (PiS with Confederation) will last two years at most. That’s what I think.”
