- President Karol Nawrocki has done what millions of Poles have been demanding for months, said Law and Justice (PiS) Vice President Przemysław Czarnek, commenting on the president’s submission of a new motion to hold a referendum on the European Union’s climate policy. He also announced that if the governing majority rejects the initiative, he will put forward one of his own.
On Thursday, President Karol Nawrocki announced that he had submitted a new motion to hold a referendum on the Green Deal. He recalled that the first proposal had been rejected by the Senate, allegedly on the grounds that the referendum question had been poorly drafted.
“If the Senate did not like the question, then at the Chancellery of the President we prepared a completely different, new question, a simple question: ‘Are you in favour of Poland implementing the European Union’s climate policy?’ The question is simple. It suggests nothing. It refers to nothing,” he said, adding: “You wanted a new question—here is a new question. Let the nation have its say.”
“Millions of Poles have been demanding it”
The president’s decision was commented on by Law and Justice Vice President Przemysław Czarnek on the X platform. According to him, Nawrocki “has done what millions of Poles have been demanding for months.”
“I congratulate him on this initiative. On matters as fundamental as climate policy, it should be the Polish people—not Brussels bureaucrats—who decide,” he declared.
According to Czarnek, “the ETS system has been draining Polish families and businesses for years.”
“In recent years alone, its cost to Poland has amounted to tens of billions of złoty annually, resulting in higher electricity and heating bills and higher prices for virtually all products,” he stressed.
Czarnek’s announcement
The PiS candidate for prime minister also announced that if the majority rejects the president’s referendum motion, he will submit his own bill “to withdraw Poland from the ETS system.”
“Enough of passively watching ideological climate policy destroy the competitiveness of our economy and hit the wallets of Poles. It is time to say clearly: Poland’s interests are more important than Brussels experiments,” he concluded.
