Behind-the-scenes talks within the leadership of Law and Justice (PiS) reveal that this year Mateusz Morawiecki repeatedly proposed to Jarosław Kaczyński that the party be split into two separate organizations, with Morawiecki taking the helm of the new formation. The proposals were rejected twice. Now, however, the plan is reportedly moving forward – though not through consensus.
Thursday’s talks between Jarosław Kaczyński and Mateusz Morawiecki ended without an agreement, while politicians associated with the “Rozwój Plus” association declined to sign declarations stating that they were not members of political organizations. During a Friday press conference, Jarosław Kaczyński announced that around thirty Law and Justice (PiS) MPs had resigned their party membership.
“On the one hand, the issue concerned the association, but above all it was connected to a proposal that had been put forward many weeks earlier – to split our party. In that situation, we could not view the association as anything other than an element of that very plan, a plan to divide the party. The proposal came from a credible person who holds a very important position within our party, and it was repeated during at least three lengthy conversations. Two of them took place one-on-one. In the third, three party activists participated, and there were also two people from outside politics who witnessed the discussion. Naturally, there could be no agreement to such a proposal under any circumstances,” Kaczyński said.
Morawiecki’s Spring Proposals
TV Republika has learned the details of when and how the alleged proposals to split the party were made. According to its sources, Morawiecki first suggested creating a “confederation.” This reportedly took place in March 2026 during a meeting between Kaczyński and Morawiecki, shortly before it was announced that Przemysław Czarnek would become the party’s candidate for prime minister.
Under the proposal, two separate parties would be created, with their activities coordinated by Jarosław Kaczyński. The Law and Justice (PiS) leader rejected the idea.
The second proposal was made during the meeting referenced by Kaczyński on Friday, when he said that “three party members took part, while two people from outside politics were also present as witnesses.” The meeting took place on April 24. After it concluded, the Law and Justice (PiS) leader published a photo showing himself seated at a table with former Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki and Przemysław Czarnek.
Before the meeting, Morawiecki said in an online program – responding to a question about whether he would like to serve as deputy prime minister in a potential government led by Przemysław Czarnek – that “not necessarily.”
“This time, Morawiecki spoke about splitting the party into two separate organizations, but no longer in the form of a confederation. Instead, he suggested a looser form of cooperation. He openly stated that he wanted to lead the new party and become its chairman. What was supposed to be a proposal for reconciliation turned into a proposal for a split. We managed to stop it at that stage,” one of Kaczyński’s closest associates told the portal.
An earlier meeting had taken place on April 21, when the Law and Justice (PiS) leader spent seven hours in discussions with Mateusz Morawiecki and Adam Bielan.
