A Legacy of Bravery
The significant involvement of Polish women in the WWII resistance was no accident but a continuation of their earlier commitment to Polish independence. From their service in the Volunteer Women’s Legion during the 1918 and 1920 conflicts to their extensive training and participation in the pre-war military organizations, women were integral to the fight for freedom.
Women in the Uprising
By August 1, 1944, approximately 7,000 women soldiers of the Home Army joined the Warsaw Uprising, with over 12,000 women participating in total. Their bravery came at a high cost, with hundreds of female soldiers and medics sacrificing their lives.
