The European Parliament Did as Bodnar Wanted – Kamiński and Wąsik Stripped of Immunity

The European Parliament has followed the wishes of Adam Bodnar. The immunity of Law and Justice (PiS) MEPs Mariusz Kamiński and Maciej Wąsik has been revoked!

Bodnar Filed the Request

As a reminder, Adam Bodnar, the Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General, submitted requests for the lifting of parliamentary immunity for PiS MEPs Wąsik and Kamiński. Bodnar’s prosecution accuses them of failing to comply with a final court ruling that banned them from holding public office.

Notably, in July last year, a few months after the politicians were released from detention, the Supreme Court’s Extraordinary Control and Public Affairs Chamber overturned a ruling by the Supreme Court’s Labor Chamber concerning Mariusz Kamiński’s parliamentary mandate, stating that the earlier decision was made with a gross violation of the law.

On March 18, reports surfaced that the European Parliament’s Legal Affairs Committee (JURI) had recommended lifting the politicians’ immunity. However, the final decision was set to be made during the European Parliament’s April session, with the vote scheduled for April 1. And so it happened.

Kamiński and Wąsik Lose Immunity

Today, the European Parliament stripped Law and Justice MEPs of their immunity. More political reckoning to come? After all, we do live in a “militant democracy”…
