Honouring Diplomacy: Polish Foreign Service Day Recognizes Two Decades of Achievements

Today, Poland celebrates Foreign Service Day, a poignant occasion that pays homage to the nation’s diplomatic legacy and the pivotal role it has played in shaping Poland’s international standing. Commemorated annually on November 16th, this day marks the historic dispatch by Józef Piłsudski of the first foreign message to world leaders, formally announcing the birth of an independent Polish state.

The genesis of Foreign Service Day can be traced back to 2009 when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs made a decisive move to establish this day as a tribute to the accomplishments of the past two decades.

In the spirit of transparency and public engagement, Foreign Service Day has been marked by public events since its inception in 2009. These events aim to demystify the workings of the foreign service and foster a deeper understanding of the critical role it plays in the nation’s affairs.

The 2010 celebrations added an extra layer of distinction as ceremonies were introduced to honour individuals who have excelled in foreign service. State orders and honorary badges were bestowed upon those who had distinguished themselves in the field, recognizing their invaluable contributions to Poland’s diplomatic efforts.

A highlight of Foreign Service Day is the presentation of awards named after Andrzej Kremer, celebrated as the “Consul of the Year.” These awards serve not only as a recognition of individual excellence but also as a nod to the collective dedication of Poland’s foreign service personnel.
