Late in the evening of November 23, three unauthorized individuals entered the premises of the 33rd Air Defense Missile Squadron in Gdynia. A patrol was dispatched to the scene and detained one man. The incident was reported by TV Republika.
The detained man was reportedly an intoxicated Belarusian citizen. He claimed that he had lost his way and was unaware that he had entered a military area. The other two individuals managed to flee.
Details of the incident were discussed on Republika’s air by journalist Krzysztof Puternicki.
“We know that there was an intrusion onto the grounds of a military unit. This is an important unit—it is located several dozen kilometers from the border with Russia. Why did this information not reach the public earlier? We can only speculate. This is not a reason for pride, but for concern. This is another incident that we are learning about only thanks to the work of Republika’s journalists,” he said.
He also added that most likely, the day after the incident, the contract with the security company responsible for guarding the military unit was terminated.
“We will keep reporting on this case on an ongoing basis, because it is very troubling. In the case of acts of sabotage on railway tracks, we were also dealing with a Belarusian citizen. We will need to closely monitor what is happening with our security,” he announced.
The editorial team requested explanations from the prosecution service and the Internal Security Agency (ABW). The responses received indicate that the prosecution has already undertaken actions in this matter. The District Prosecutor informed that the proceedings remain under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Gdynia, while the authority authorized to provide information is the spokesperson for the Regional Prosecutor’s Office in Gdańsk. In turn, the spokesperson of that office stated that an official communiqué is to be published on Monday, explaining the delay by the absence of the supervising prosecutor and the lack of access to the relevant documents.
In its response, the ABW referred the editorial team to its press spokesperson. Questions on the matter were also sent to the Ministry of National Defense, while the Military Counterintelligence Service stated that it is preparing an official position.
