Is Ziobro’s Arrest About Law—or Headlines?

‘Why do they want to use pre-trial detention against Minister Ziobro? For one reason only: to show in the media that they have the former minister of justice in handcuffs. And the charges themselves are extremely absurd,’ says Dariusz Matecki in a video posted on X, commenting on the motion submitted to the Sejm on Tuesday by Waldemar Żurek to lift Zbigniew Ziobro’s parliamentary immunity, as well as to detain and arrest him.

‘The detentions used by Donald Tusk’s government are coercive detentions. In all the high-profile arrests, including in my case, people linked to PiS were essentially placed in custody while no investigative actions were carried out at the same time. This shows they are political set-ups. Deliberately, to show a politician in handcuffs being led to the prosecutor’s office. The charges are often invented, but the photos remain,’ Matecki says in the video posted on X, commenting on the motion submitted to the Sejm on Tuesday by Waldemar Żurek to lift Zbigniew Ziobro’s immunity, as well as to detain and arrest him.

‘Why do they want to use pre-trial detention against Minister Ziobro? For one reason only—so they can show in the media that they have the former minister of justice in handcuffs. And the charges themselves are extremely absurd,’ Matecki continues, going on to explain what, in his view, makes those charges absurd.

At a press conference, the spokeswoman for the prosecutor general, Prosecutor Anna Adamiak, announced that the 158-page motion from the prosecution had been forwarded to the Speaker of the Sejm. According to the prosecution, members of the “criminal group” led by Ziobro awarded grants to entities that were not entitled to them—for example, because they did not meet formal requirements. There were also instances where the funds provided were spent on purposes other than those for which the fund was established.”
