Iustitia Greenlights Members for National Council of the Judiciary. Pawełczyk-Woicka: “Officially…”

Zero surprise. Officially. The Association of Judges Iustitia has allowed its members to run for the National Council of the Judiciary (KRS) under the current law, “Officially,” said KRS Chair Dagmara Pawełczyk-Woicka.

Minister of Justice and Prosecutor General Waldemar Żurek announced on Friday that as of February 4, the amendment to the KRS Act is on the desk of President Karol Nawrocki. Announcing this, Minister Waldemar Żurek emphasized rhetorically that it is in the hands of the president whether the rule of law will be restored in Poland. Representatives of the Association of Judges Iustitia have been just as critical of the KRS for years.

Apparently, they do not believe that the solutions prepared by Żurek’s ministry will gain the president’s approval. So – after years of accusations that the law violates the constitution, and the narrative about neo-KRS and neo-judges – Iustitia has given the green light for its members to run for another term on the KRS.

The information was conveyed by KRS Chair Dagmara Pawełczyk-Woicka

“Zero surprise. Officially. The Association of Judges Iustitia has allowed its members to run for the National Council of the Judiciary under the current law,” she wrote.

She mocked that “there would be nothing unusual about this, but the same Iustitia ‘filed a criminal complaint against members of the KRS and candidates in the 2018 and 2022 elections.'”

The current term began in May 2022 and, according to the law, ends in May 2026.
