Katarzyna Niewiadoma has made history by claiming the leader’s jersey at the Tour de France after a fifth stage in Amneville. The Polish cyclist, representing Canyon-SRAM, finished second in a closely contested sprint, narrowly losing to Hungary’s Blanka Vas.
Niewiadoma’s strong form throughout the Tour, which began in Rotterdam, kept her in close contention with the leaders. The race took a pivotal turn just six kilometers from the finish when a crash in the peloton, involving key competitors like Demi Vollering and Puck Pieterse, allowed Niewiadoma to push ahead.
Despite finishing second in the stage, Niewiadoma’s position at the front of the race was enough to give her a 19-second lead in the general classification. With just three stages remaining, including the challenging climbs in the Alps, Niewiadoma faces a tough road ahead as she seeks to maintain her lead.
