Key Talks Without Poland. Sakiewicz: “The Prime Minister Is Treated as Persona Non Grata”

Crucial talks on peace in Ukraine are underway around the world. Why is the Polish side not taking part in them? This question particularly concerns Poles. “We are in a truly tragic situation right now”, assessed Tomasz Sakiewicz, president of TV Republika.

On Sunday in Geneva, Switzerland, representatives of the informal E3 group of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, as well as the European Union, the United States, and Ukraine met. The talks also focused on a 28-point peace plan for Ukraine proposed by the United States. Not a single representative of the Polish government took part in the consultations.

After the talks, they were summed up as “extremely productive”. In addition, they are expected to lead to an updated peace agreement meant to end the war with Russia. A continuation of these consultations is scheduled for today. And once again – without the participation of a Polish representative.

Moreover, on the sidelines of the G20 Group summit in Johannesburg on Saturday, leaders of the European Union, Canada, Italy, France, the United Kingdom, Germany, and Japan met to discuss Ukraine. In a joint statement, the leaders emphasized that the US draft plan for Ukraine is a basis that requires further work.

Now in Luanda, the capital celebrating the 50th anniversary of Angola’s independence, the 7th European Union-African Union Summit begins. And it is only this event that the head of the Polish government, Donald Tusk, is attending.

This raises a question: why is Poland not taking part in the key talks on peace in Ukraine?

Sakiewicz: “We are isolated

Tomasz Sakiewicz, president of TV Republika, answered the above question with the words: “We are isolated, which is visible.”

The country that was the first to provide and organize assistance for Ukraine is excluded from any negotiations concerning Ukraine. And not only Ukraine, because there are also threads there concerning Poland. And we are not allowed in. Why? Because the prime minister is treated as persona non grata by the American administration conducting these talks. “We are in a truly tragic situation right now. The only thing that can be done is to get rid of these pests. They cling to each other like sausage in żurek,” he explained.

As he noted, “this is simply a period that will have to be made up for in the history of Poland, and let us hope that it will not all end much worse.”

Asked whether, in his opinion, it will be possible to reach an agreement, he stated: “In my view, the Russians do not want any agreement, but they are in a bad economic situation.”

Moreover, the damage they have inflicted on themselves through the war, and that Ukrainians have helped inflict – both in the economy and through sanctions – will be long-term. The Russians have been pushed out of many markets, their infrastructure is increasingly destroyed. In a country that is the world’s largest exporter and producer of oil, there is a shortage of gasoline. People will fight for it,” said Tomasz Sakiewicz.

According to him, “Russia will therefore be recovering from these losses for a very long time. However, this does not mean that any kind of revolution will break out there. If Putin does not obtain everything he promised the Russians, then peace is unlikely. Nevertheless, one should not lose hope. Any attempt to limit killing is always good. But not at all costs, because that always ends in an even bigger war.”
