KO MP Claims EU Presidency is More Important Than the Millennium of the Polish Kingdom

Monika Rosa, an MP from the Civic Coalition (KO), who has long advocated for the recognition of Silesian nationality and the Silesian language, surprised many with her response to Bogdan Rymanowski during a broadcast on Polsat News. The discussion revolved around the celebrations marking the 1000th anniversary of the Polish Kingdom.

This year marks the millennium of the coronation of Poland’s first two kings. In 1025, Bolesław the Brave was crowned in the Gniezno Cathedral. Later that year, on December 25, his successor, Mieszko II Lambert, was also crowned in the same cathedral.

On December 13, however, the government—true to form—simply ignored these two significant events in Polish statehood. Instead, it remains focused on Poland’s upcoming EU presidency, where one of its latest “highly responsible tasks” is to revive discussions among member states on abolishing seasonal clock changes in Europe. It’s hard to imagine this effort will do much to boost Poland’s international prestige…

“Why isn’t the Polish state, or the government, taking advantage of such an incredible opportunity? We’ve all seen the benefits that similar celebrations, such as the coronation of a British monarch, have brought to the UK. It’s an incredible PR boost abroad. Shouldn’t we mark this anniversary with a major event?” Rymanowski asked the KO MP during the program.

Monika Rosa’s response took not only the viewers by surprise but also Rymanowski himself—a journalist who has heard his fair share of remarkable statements from politicians over the years.

“I think we’re in a unique time for Poland right now—a period of the EU presidency, a period of significant economic shifts toward defense spending, a time of major investments. And I believe this is the best kind of PR Poland can achieve in terms of its international standing,” Rosa replied with a smile, in line with her party’s “cheerful coalition” image.

Her remarks were quickly met with reactions online—and they weren’t exactly flattering…
