Communist Hero of the Anti-Communist Right? “I Cannot Understand It”

“It is enough to bark at Ukrainians, say a few things about the UPA, assess the political situation quite rationally, and say something against immigrants,” Prof. Sławomir Cenckiewicz listed while describing the media activity of Leszek Miller. In the historian’s view, that is sufficient for a segment of the right wing that has turned the former prime minister into a standard-bearer.

During Thursday’s edition of Republic of the Secret Services on TV Republika, Prof. Sławomir Cenckiewicz and journalist Michał Rachoń discussed the condition of the Polish right. In that context, they referred to Leszek Miller and the former prime minister’s public activity, which is gaining increasing traction among the anti-communist side of the political spectrum.

“On all the key issues of the Third Polish Republic – Tusk, Kiszczak, Jaruzelski, Smolensk, Bolek – Miller holds mainstream, positive views, yet he has become, as Bronisław Wildstein pointed out, some kind of hero for the right,” Prof. Cenckiewicz noted.

“How can a communist who oversaw the transfer of KGB money for the construction of Poland’s political system become a hero of the anti-communist right? I simply cannot understand it,” Rachoń asked.

“He can, he can… it is enough to bark at Ukrainians, say a few things about the UPA, assess the political situation quite rationally, say something against immigrants and…” admitted the former head of the National Security Bureau, prompting the host to add:

“And never say anything bad about Russia.”

“And then we have a man who is placed in the realist-conservative-right-wing-patriotic camp that seeks change in Poland,” the historian said.

He argued that “part of the right is so devoid of principles that these issues are irrelevant to them.” He added: “They think about reforming the system solely in terms of installing their own people.”

“Any proposals for change – such as what I advocate, namely the creation of a new structure for the special services – trigger a full-blown backstage uproar on the right,” he admitted.
