Legia Warsaw wins the Fortuna Polish Cup 2022/23 after a penalty shootout against Rakow Czestochowa. But the stakes were even higher than just the cup, as the winner would also receive a huge financial reward! The final was played on Tuesday, May 2nd, at PGE Narodowy, with the two best teams of the PKO Ekstraklasa season competing against each other.
The prize was not only the trophy but also a considerable amount of money. Each team participating in the tournament receives a cash prize, but the champion gets the largest amount by far!
The Polish Cup started with a cash prize of PLN 15,000 for teams that were eliminated in the first round. The amounts increase with each subsequent round, with PLN 45,000, PLN 90,000, PLN 190,000, and PLN 380,000 paid out during the semifinals. A total of almost six million zlotys were up for grabs for the two teams fighting for the trophy at PGE Narodowy.
The runner-up, Rakow Czestochowa, was not left empty-handed, as they received a consolation prize of PLN 760,000 from the Polish Football Association. Legia Warsaw won the game on penalties, with goalkeeper Kacper Tobiasz emerging as the hero of the match.
In addition to the trophy, Legia Warsaw received a reward of five million zlotys from the Polish Football Association for their victory. The champion of the Polish Cup has been receiving a five million zloty prize since the 2020/2021 season, which is two million more than in previous years. The last two editions of the tournament were won by Rakow Czestochowa’s footballers, but this year, it was Legia Warsaw who triumphed.
