Magdalena Fręch faced a defeat in the opening round of Wimbledon, unable to match the superior performance of Ons Jabeur. The Tunisian, who had reached the tournament final in the previous year, secured a commanding victory of 6-3, 6-3.
Ranked 70th in the WTA rankings, Fręch had previously encountered Jabeur earlier this year during the Indian Wells tournament. With Jabeur holding a strong position at WTA 6, she was already considered a favourite to triumph at Wimbledon.
During Tuesday’s match, Fręch managed to stay competitive with Jabeur until a 2-2 tie. However, her opponent then broke the Polish player’s serve, seizing the advantage and ultimately extending her lead. Jabeur maintained a consistently high level of play. As the first set neared its end, Jabeur claimed the set 6-3.
In the second set, Jabeur unleashed a dominating performance, surging ahead with a lead. It appeared that victory was imminent and merely a formality for the Tunisian player. However, Fręch managed to win a game, secure her first breakpoint of the match, and successfully break her rival’s serve. The Pole levelled the score at 3-3. Despite her valiant effort, Fręch ultimately fell to Jabeur with a 6-3 score in the second set, sealing Jabeur’s 2-0 victory.
