Magyar to Visit Poland Next Week

Hungarian Prime Minister Peter Magyar will travel to Warsaw next week, Hungary’s incoming foreign minister Anita Orban said in parliament on Monday.

Magyar had already announced during the election campaign that his first foreign trip as head of government would be to Warsaw. He will then travel to Vienna and Brussels. He confirmed the plan to visit Poland in his election night speech and in subsequent public appearances. The aim of the visit, as he stressed, is to rebuild the “thousand-year Polish-Hungarian friendship”.

The incoming head of Hungarian diplomacy also said in an interview with RTL television that she would accompany the prime minister on these trips.

Speaking during a hearing before the parliamentary foreign affairs committee, Orban emphasized that the Hungarian diplomacy under her leadership would attach “special importance” to rebuilding relations with Poland, which – in her view – are key to improving cooperation within the Visegrad Group. In this context, she also announced “building relations with the Czech Republic and Slovakia on new foundations”.

“The Hungarian foreign policy will not be guided by party interests or the interests of a third country, but by the interests of a sovereign Hungary”, Orban assured.

She added that the goal of Hungary’s new government would be to resolve disputed issues in relations with partners, while consistently and predictably representing Budapest’s interests.
