Major Layoffs Announced at Century-Old Stomil Plant in Bydgoszcz

At the Bydgoszcz Rubber Industry Plant “Stomil,” which has existed for over a hundred years, most of the workforce will lose their current jobs by the end of April. According to information provided by Gazeta Pomorska, collective layoffs will affect 114 out of 134 employees by May 1.

Bydgoszcz Rubber Industry Plant “Stomil” is a Polish manufacturer of rubber products. As the portal tysol.plrecalls, the company was the first in Poland to produce hydraulic hoses. Its product range also included industrial hoses and other rubber goods. “Due to a decline in sales revenue, the Bydgoszcz-based ‘Stomil’ is currently carrying out collective layoffs,” the portal reports.

So far, 92 out of 134 employees have received termination notices. However, as many as 114 people have been reported to the District Labour Office in Bydgoszcz as part of the planned group layoffs. The reduction in employment is expected to continue until the end of April.

“In an interview with Gazeta Pomorska, the company’s president, Krzysztof Molen, stated that the cumulative loss of Bydgoszcz’s ‘Stomil’ for the years 2022–2025 exceeded PLN 36 million, caused by a drop in sales.”

The restructuring plan currently being implemented at the factory assumes that operations will continue only in the profitable areas of the company, as well as in the production of rubber sheets.

“Other branches, such as the production of hydraulic hoses, industrial hoses, as well as gaskets and molded rubber products, have been discontinued,”

according to tysol.pl.

As revealed by the portal dlahandlu.pl, “Stomil’s” situation deteriorated sharply more than two years ago. This was caused by a massive influx of Chinese products into Poland, which, despite not meeting high EU standards, are pushing domestic products out of the market.
