Mandatory Military Service Debated at the Belweder; BBN Chief: “The Project Remains Active”

“It is very important and significant for us, from the perspective of the National Security Bureau and the Head of State, to develop, through the broadest possible consensus, a way of thinking and a forward-looking variant of this model of mandatory military service, so that these findings can be implemented into the new National Security Strategy and into what President Karol Nawrocki has called the Constitution of National Security. This is not an abandoned project. We would like to draw on these experiences,” said Prof. Sławomir Cenckiewicz, Head of the National Security Bureau (BBN).

Today, the Belweder is hosting the conference titled “Between Voluntariness and Obligation: Does Poland Need the Return of Mandatory Military Service?”

The opening remarks to the conference participants were delivered by the Head of the National Security Bureau (BBN), Prof. Sławomir Cenckiewicz.

“We want to talk, but we do not want to talk only among ourselves, about a fundamental issue that is part of the broader problem of national security, namely mandatory military service or the reserves of the Polish Armed Forces in a situation of permanent instability and crisis management, in which we have found ourselves for several years now, and there is no clear prospect that this will change in the near future,”

Prof. Cenckiewicz stated.

“We want to discuss the current system; we want to ask questions about how efficient this system is and whether it corresponds to the threats I mentioned. We want to consider solutions that could apply in Poland with certain adjustments, as well as those introduced by countries in our region. There are several models for building reserves, and the structure of this conference is designed to confront different viewpoints on the matter,”

he added.

The Head of the National Security Bureau emphasized that the main positions related to the issue of mandatory military service would be represented at the conference in the Belweder.

We would like to draw on these experiences,”

he indicated.
