The Military Police (Żandarmeria Wojskowa) has launched an investigation into military documents that found their way into the media. “So far, no one has been charged in this case,” authorities stated in an official communiqué.
The news portal Onet reported on Thursday that it had obtained the documents. According to the portal, the materials included maps of military depots, evacuation plans for explosive materials in the event of war, and operational procedures.
The collection also reportedly contained technical descriptions of explosive storage facilities, personal data of unit employees, deployment plans for one of the units during training exercises, and many other documents.
Onet claims that the individuals who provided the materials said they had found them at a landfill site.
Lieutenant Colonel Marek Chmiel, spokesperson for the Armed Forces Support Inspectorate, stated that as soon as the military unit became aware that Onet might possess classified military documents, the 2nd Regional Logistics Base (2RBLog) immediately initiated an internal inquiry.
In the afternoon, the Military Police issued a formal statement on the matter:
“On October 8, the Military Police unit in Białystok, under the supervision of the Military Affairs Division of the Białystok-North District Prosecutor’s Office, initiated an investigation into an offense under Article 266 of the Penal Code,” the statement read.
“So far, no one has been charged in this case. The planned procedural actions are currently underway,” it added.
Article 266 of the Polish Penal Code reads:
