During today’s demonstration, Law and Justice (PiS) MP Krzysztof Szczucki told the Niezalezna.pl portal that the governing coalition is approaching a tipping point. He called the protest against the migration pact and the Mercosur agreement part of an “autumn offensive” aimed at removing the current government from power.
A demonstration is being held at Castle Square in Warsaw, where Poles are voicing their opposition to the EU migration pact and to the agreement with Mercosur countries, which they say is harmful to Polish agriculture. Among the protesters are politicians from Law and Justice.
A political tipping point is approaching
MP Krzysztof Szczucki commented for Niezależna.pl on the significance of today’s gathering.
“It’s easy to see that a tipping point is coming. There is no agreement among the coalition partners, that is, they are arguing more and more, especially along the Civic Platform–Polska 2050 axis,”
the politician said, pointing to internal tensions within the coalition.
He added that the demonstration is one manifestation of a broader campaign. “This is one of the first signs of that autumn offensive aimed at finally making this bad government stop governing,” MP Szczucki declared.
Exemption from the migration pact? “Only thanks to this pressure”
The MP also addressed media reports suggesting that Poland might be excluded from the mechanism of so-called mandatory solidarity. He stressed that any potential concessions from Brussels would not be the achievement of Donald Tusk’s government, but rather the result of strong social and political pressure from patriotic circles.
“If that’s how it turns out, it will be only thanks to this very pressure of ours – of the Border Defense Movement, President Nawrocki, and of demonstrations like this,”
he emphasized.
Szczucki approached the media reports with caution, calling them “wishful thinking” for now. He underlined that nothing has been settled yet and urged caution in interpreting the statements.
“We’ll see. When we actually see that exemption, then we’ll believe it,” he said, adding that he is “fully convinced” that any change in the EU’s position on this matter would be possible “only thanks to this pressure.”
He indicated that it was the resistance of “Polish patriots,” who “refused to accept illegal migration, defended Poland’s borders, and amplified this issue,” that forced the government to recognize the lack of public acceptance for the migration pact. “The government understood that there is no consent in Poland for (…) such an uncontrolled inflow of migrants into the country,” he concluded.
The Mercosur agreement is a threat to Poland
The second key topic of the demonstration is opposition to the EU’s trade agreement with Mercosur countries (including Brazil and Argentina), which, according to experts, would devastate Polish agriculture by flooding the market with cheap food that does not meet European standards.
“This Mercosur agreement is also a major threat. No one needs convincing that Polish agriculture will lose a great deal if this cheap food, produced under conditions far inferior to European, to Polish ones, starts coming into Europe,”
MP Szczucki warned in his interview with Niezalezna.pl.
