President Karol Nawrocki, on his way back from his planned visit to the United States on September 3, will meet in Rome with Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, announced the head of the Presidential Office for International Policy, Marcin Przydacz. He added that one of the topics of discussion will include building a coalition opposing the agreement between the EU and Mercosur.
Crucial visits by President Nawrocki
Asked during a press conference about efforts to build a coalition against the trade agreement between the European Union and Mercosur, the head of the Office for International Policy pointed out that the president will hold talks with countries for which concluding “this agreement, harmful to Polish and European farmers,” would be disadvantageous.
Przydacz stated that on his return from the planned September 3 visit to Washington, President Nawrocki will meet in Rome with Pope Leo XIV and Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.
“This topic will certainly be raised there,” he added.
What’s next for the EU-Mercosur agreement?
Work on the final form of the EU-Mercosur trade agreement is currently underway within the EU.
In December 2024, the European Commission announced the conclusion of nearly 25 years of negotiations with South American countries concerning the content of the agreement. Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay reached a political agreement with the Commission. For several weeks, the European Commission has been announcing that it will soon present the text of the agreement to the member states, once the legal review and translations into all official EU languages are completed.
Poland and France have repeatedly voiced objections to the agreement, pointing to the risk of destabilising the EU agricultural market. Both countries have declared their readiness to form a so-called blocking minority.
