An agreement with the South American Mercosur bloc means not only the destruction of European agriculture, including Poland’s, but also a drastic deterioration in the quality of food products consumed by residents of the European Union. The countries grouped in Mercosur allow the use of a number of pesticides banned in the EU. In the largest country in the group, Brazil, no fewer than… 3,669 such substances are approved for use in agriculture.
Only Germany can be pleased with the agreement with the Mercosur group; once again in its history, it believes that what benefits Berlin must be humbly accepted by all the other countries of our continent. This appears to be the view of the German, von der Leyen, who has reason for satisfaction, since the Mercosur deal will enable her homeland to sell the products of German industry in South America. And that European agriculture will collapse in the process? Perhaps that’s for the best, eurocrats acting to Berlin’s tune seem to think.
And Europeans themselves? Some of them will no doubt be pleased with cheaper, initially, food from Uruguay, Argentina, or Brazil. But that enthusiasm will be short-lived, because once we have said goodbye to European agriculture, which will be unable to withstand unfair competition from agriculture across the Atlantic, prices will certainly rise.
“As a result, after first destroying the most important sector of EU countries’ economies, Polish consumers, among others, will pay dearly for food of much poorer quality. This will happen because South American producers are not bound by the high standards that the still-existing European agriculture must meet. In the Mercosur countries, for example, pesticides widely banned in Europe, products that are very harmful to health, are used. Brazil alone permits as many as 3,669 such products.”
This, however, is hard to learn about on the Old Continent, because, for instance, the documentary entitled “Pesticides – European Hypocrisy,” which shows food production in Brazil using poisonous pesticides, has been… removed from the internet. Excerpts from the film, produced in 2022 by ARTE TV, can now be seen only on some social-media accounts on X.
The film reported not only on the dire consequences of consuming food harmful to health, but also that pesticides, including, among others, atrazine and metolachlor, were purchased by Brazil from European corporations. In 2018 alone, European companies sold there over 80,000 tons of pesticides banned in the EU. The vast majority of them came from the United Kingdom, Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, France, Belgium, and Spain.
Experts warn that pesticides increase the risk of allergies, asthma, cancers, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, endocrine disorders, as well as developmental defects and illnesses in children. All of this is what the EU and the agreement with the Mercosur group are serving up to us.
