PiS Debate on the Future of Agriculture. Kaczyński: Good Conditions for Farmers Are the Goal of a Democratic State

On Saturday, a conference of Law and Justice (PiS) on agriculture is taking place in Stary Lubotyn, under the slogan “We Defend the Polish Countryside.” The event was opened by the party’s leader, Jarosław Kaczyński.

The PiS leader emphasized that agriculture should be important for all of Poland, regardless of citizens’ political views, and that it is an element of the state’s security in any era. Speaking about farmers, he stated that they are a social group that does not realize its own strength and should be provided with conditions comparable to those of people not engaged in agriculture.

This is the goal of a democratic state, it can be read in the Polish constitution, it can also be read in the Polish tradition. This tradition, which we call democratic, but of course this is not a reference to the current government, because it also calls itself democratic, but it is as democratic as the one that came to power after 1945 – they also called themselves the democratic camp” – he stated, adding that his party cares about ensuring that the principle of equality among citizens “is not a fiction.”

Kaczyński stressed that his party took on this task while in government. “They took it on in a situation where it was really very far from being realized, because this inequality was not only a fact, but a fact – in the case of those who handed us power – a fact that was accepted, even incorporated into a certain concept of polarization-diffusion development […] it boiled down to the idea that first the large centers should develop and later […] it should spread to others. Only the thing is, I do not know a country – and I think no one here knows a country – where that would succeed,” he noted.

It is an attempt to rationalize, to justify something that is deeply unjust, socially harmful, and destroys what is the foundation of the existence of a nation, because the foundation of a nation is the existence of a community, and the community must be something real” – he said.

As part of the conference, two discussion panels will be held with the participation of former heads of the Ministry of Agriculture, including Robert Telus, Krzysztof Ciecióra, Henryk Kowalczyk, and Anna Gembicka, as well as PiS Members of the European Parliament, experts, and farmers associated with the party. The conference is expected to last until around 3 p.m.
