Expanding its fleet, PKP Intercity has inked a deal with Newag S.A. for 46 new electric locomotives, capable of speeds up to 160 km/h. The first units are set to hit the tracks in 2024, within 26 months of contract signing.
Modernization Drive: A Greener Future on Rails
PKP Intercity’s rolling stock strategy aims to have all vehicles new or upgraded by 2030. The latest move involves procuring 46 single-system electric locomotives tailored for 160 km/h speeds. Outfitted with ETCS Level 2 safety, diagnostics, fire prevention, monitoring, door control, GPS, and communication systems, these units will be delivered by Newag, reaching tracks by 2024. Post this contract, the carrier’s fleet will boast 96 such locomotives.

Tomasz Gontarz, PKP Intercity’s Vice President, notes, “These eco-friendly vehicles will connect previously inaccessible areas, enhancing our national rail network.”

With a commitment to quality and innovation, Newag’s President, Zbigniew Konieczek, emphasizes the potential for future collaboration, reflecting on the already lucrative partnership valued at approximately 2.6 billion PLN.
