Poland Celebrates 234th Anniversary of the Constitution of May 3rd

On May 3rd, 2025, Poland marked the 234th anniversary of the Constitution of May 3rd with national pride, a presidential address, and solemn celebrations in Warsaw.

A Day of National Pride and Democratic Commitment

On May 3rd, 2025, Poland commemorated the 234th anniversary of the adoption of the Constitution of May 3rd, 1791 — the second oldest constitution in the world and the first in Europe. President Andrzej Duda led the official celebrations at Castle Square in Warsaw, emphasizing the historical significance and democratic values of the document. “This is a day of Polish pride, great pride in our historical achievements, in our magnificent state and our statehood over a thousand years,” he declared. President Duda also reminded citizens of the importance of the upcoming presidential election, urging them to participate: “You must go to these elections! I ask you to do so! Do it collectively, with full responsibility, treating it not only as a civil right but as a duty.”

Honoring the Past and Safeguarding the Future

Earlier in the day, the Presidential Couple attended a Holy Mass for the Homeland at the Archcathedral Basilica in Warsaw, accompanied by government members, uniformed services, veterans, scouts, and city residents. The President also awarded the Order of the White Eagle to artist Janusz Kapusta and economist Jerzy Kropiwnicki. Reflecting on the role of the presidency, Duda reiterated the constitutional duty to uphold the law: “The President of the Republic of Poland will be — as the guardian of the constitution — obliged to speak out when the law is violated.” He echoed the words of late President Lech Kaczyński: “The Constitution should be interpreted and read as it was written,” cautioning against drawing meanings never inscribed in the text.
