Poland Falls to Portugal in the Nations League: Zieliński’s Goal Not Enough

Poland’s national team suffered a 1-3 defeat to Portugal in the UEFA Nations League on Saturday night at the National Stadium in Warsaw. Despite a goal from Piotr Zieliński, the Polish side couldn’t overcome the powerful Portuguese lineup.

Coach Michał Probierz surprised many by starting 19-year-old Maxi Oyedele, who was making his senior debut after just a few appearances for Legia Warsaw. Poland had not beaten Portugal in 18 years, with their last victory coming in 2006 at Stadion Śląski.

The match started poorly for Poland. In the 26th minute, Bruno Fernandes set up Bernardo Silva for a stunning volley, giving Portugal the lead. Cristiano Ronaldo then extended the advantage with a close-range strike in the 37th minute after a brilliant run by Rafael Leão.

Poland found some hope in the 78th minute when Piotr Zieliński finished a slick exchange with Kacper Urbański, bringing the score to 1-2. However, an unfortunate own goal by Jan Bednarek in the 88th minute sealed Poland’s fate.

This loss leaves Poland still searching for a win against Portugal in nearly two decades.
