The Polish government recently proposed an amendment to the Penal Code introducing a new crime category—”road homicide.” This initiative, announced by PiS party representatives, aims to address an increase in deadly road accidents and enhance public safety.
Addressing Fatal Road Accidents
At a press conference, PiS MP Rafał Weber highlighted a concerning rise in traffic accident statistics compared to 2023. According to Weber, current measures are insufficient, prompting PiS to take action independently. The proposed “road homicide” offense targets drivers responsible for fatal accidents while intoxicated, under the influence of drugs, or driving without a valid license.
Weber expressed concern that courts currently lack the authority to impose adequate sentences on such offenders. “Punishments are often shockingly lenient, even for those driving under the influence,” he stated. He emphasized the need to completely exclude dangerous individuals from Poland’s roads to prevent future tragedies.
Under current law, causing death in an accident can lead to imprisonment of up to 12 years if the driver is intoxicated or impaired. The new “road homicide” offense would introduce stricter penalties, potentially garnering support across political parties.
