The association Lawyers for Poland Association has submitted a request to the Chancellery of the Prime Minister for access to the full text of the EU SAFE loan agreement. “A state governed by the rule of law cannot rely on PR statements and press conferences”, they stressed on the X platform.
On Friday, a loan agreement under the SAFE program was signed at the Chancellery of the Prime Minister. Under the scheme, Poland is set to receive approximately €43.7 billion in loans intended for defense purposes. The document was signed by European Commissioners as well as ministers Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz and Andrzej Domański.
The SAFE agreement was signed despite clear opposition from President Karol Nawrocki. The opposition also protested against the deal. Politicians warned that the government is indebting the state for 45 years, and that the disbursement of funds will depend on the conditionality mechanism.
“Poles Have the Right to Know”
On Saturday, the Lawyers for Poland association announced that it had formally requested the Chancellery of the Prime Minister to disclose the full content of the agreement.
“We demand the disclosure of the entire agreement, along with all annexes and language versions, as this document may concern multi-billion debt burdening all citizens of the Republic of Poland”, they wrote on X.
The association emphasized that “Poles have the right to know what financial obligations have been undertaken on their behalf, under what terms, and on what legal basis – especially in a situation where the President of the Republic of Poland has not signed the law concerning the SAFE program”.
“A state governed by the rule of law cannot rely on PR statements and press conferences. In a democracy, the content of agreements concluded by the authorities must be transparent to citizens”, the statement concluded.
