Police vs. Batman. MP comments: “This is part of the fight against the opposition”

The police operation to detain “Batman” has stirred public opinion. How do politicians from various parties view the matter? They shared their perspectives on TV Republika. “This is a manifestation of the fight against the opposition,” assessed Marek Jakubiak.

Yesterday, an unusual incident took place on Długi Targ in Gdańsk. A man dressed as Batman (following in the footsteps of Zorro and Spiderman!) hung a protest banner out of a window. However, this did not occur during the election silence period, which only began at midnight.

Shortly after the “action,” a group of police officers entered the hotel building to detain the man.

Due to the suspicion of committing an offense under Article 52 § 2(1) of the Code of Misdemeanors (disrupting a lawful assembly) and failure to comply with police orders, officers prepared the necessary documentation, which will be submitted to the court along with a motion for punishment, the police reported.

Poles “stand in solidarity with Batman”

The incident quickly gained media attention, and internet users openly expressed their “solidarity with Batman.”

The biggest response was sparked by Tomasz Sakiewicz, president of TV Republika, whose post featuring the Batman logo has already been viewed by over 227,000 users on X.

The topic was also addressed this afternoon during a political panel on TV Republika. What do politicians from different parties think about the situation?

According to Marek Jakubiak (Free Republicans), the Batman incident is essentially a part of the “fight against the opposition.”

Slogans are appearing that don’t necessarily sit well with those in power, and this is how they ‘retaliate.’ They want to silence people, intimidate them, and this bodes ill. Let me remind you that in the 1970s and 1980s, this was how the underground opposition was fought—and it didn’t work, because that was their coming of age. When people are already mocking them—this government—it means their end is near. — said the MP.

Adrian Borecki asked Civic Platform MP Artur Łącki: “Should it be that people are pursued and arrested because of their views?”

The PO politician’s answer was surprising. Either he was unaware that the event occurred the day before, or… he adopted a particular narrative.

“You don’t know what this person was shouting during the happening, or what he said. Maybe it was electoral campaigning, which is not allowed during the election silence,”

he replied.

The host, however, pointed out that the incident could not have violated election silence, as it occurred the previous day.

“I don’t know what this Batman was ranting about. If he really ran around as Batman saying he had superpowers and would help everyone, the police should have just let it go. Unless he was a madman who could have harmed someone—or if he was shouting electoral slogans, which is prohibited,”

he said.

Later, he admitted, however, that:

“He had the right to express his views, and the police should focus on more serious matters.”
