Polish Army returns to Gorzów Wielkopolski, establishing the 15th Lubuska Brigade to strengthen national defense and regional crisis support.
On January 12, 2025, Polish Minister of Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz signed a letter of intent in Gorzów Wielkopolski, formalizing the transfer of 40 hectares of land and a vocational school building for military use. This step marks the re-establishment of a military presence in the city after a 25-year absence.
Strengthening Local Defense Capabilities
The newly formed 15th Lubuska Territorial Defense Brigade will establish its headquarters in Gorzów, enhancing Poland’s national security and supporting regional development. The brigade, commanded by Colonel Leszek Giergielewicz since September 2024, aims to field around 1,000 soldiers across three battalions.
Community and Security Impact
Local leaders and residents have long awaited the military’s return. The initiative reflects a broader government effort to bolster national defense and provide critical crisis management support in partnership with regional authorities.
