A tragic fire broke out late Saturday night in a four-story tenement house on Kraszewskiego Street in Poznań, resulting in a deadly explosion and the loss of two firefighters’ lives. The fire, which began in the building’s basement, escalated dramatically when an explosion occurred as firefighters were attempting to locate the source of the flames.
The incident, reported at 11:50 PM, saw emergency responders on the scene within minutes. However, the explosion that followed left 11 firefighters injured, in addition to three civilians—a resident and two passersby—who were also hurt and subsequently taken to the hospital.
Despite intensive rescue efforts involving 100 firefighters and 26 emergency vehicles, two firefighters who were in the basement at the time of the explosion remained unaccounted for until midday Sunday. Unfortunately, the tragic news of their deaths was confirmed by Prime Minister Donald Tusk, who praised their heroism, stating, “They are true heroes of our time. The families of the victims will be supported by the state.”
The aftermath of the incident has left Kraszewskiego Street closed, and the affected residents have been evacuated, with some staying with relatives and others in temporary accommodations provided by the city. The local government, led by Greater Poland Voivode Agata Sobczyk, has promised immediate financial assistance of up to 6,000 PLN for each affected individual, with plans for further support in collaboration with city authorities.
Psychological support has also been made available for those impacted by the tragedy, as authorities work to help residents return to normal life. The tragic loss of the two firefighters has cast a somber mood over the rescue efforts, highlighting the dangers faced by those who risk their lives to protect others.
